Work-Based Learning

Work-based learning is career exploration, work-experience, structured training, and/or mentoring at the work site.

Work-based learning provides students with opportunities to study complex subject matter as well as vital workplace skills in a hands-on, “real life” environment.  Students have opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the classroom to talks performed in the workplace.  As students see the connections between their school work and what is required at the work-site, they gain an understanding of the importance of learning and are able to make better decisions about their future.

Work-based learning activities may include:
•Guest speakers                                •Career fair
•Field experiences                             •Job shadowing
•Service learning                                •Volunteer work
•School-based enterprises              •Internships/Clinicals
•Cooperative work experiences       •Apprenticeships

Student internships involve a part-time work experience along with a weekly class.  Students participating in the internship program are able to see the reality of their chosen fields. The weekly classes are designed to enhance the student’s work experience and better prepare them for being successful in their chosen profession.

Tooele County School District has two part-time work-based learning coordinators.  These coordinators are located at Tooele High School and Grantsville High School.  They both assist as needed with WBL related activities at Tooele Jr. High and Grantsville High.  Dugway High and Wendover High are both included as much as possible in WBL activities including Reality Town and Career Days.  Internships are offered on a limited basis at Dugway High, Wendover High, and Tooele High South Campus.
